You know what I love?
Cake. I love cake.
You know what I love more than cake?
Delicious cake that has been decorated with all of the happy in the world. Like this one that I made over the weekend.
This was my first genuine attempt at fancy cake decorating. Sure - I've piped my fair share of cupcakes and spackled buttercream over many cakes in the past - but this one is special.
Underneath all the pretty is a basic (and deliciously moist) chocolate cake with a ganache centre, and it's been crumb coated and iced with a vanilla buttercream, coloured with Americolor gel colours. It's only a 6" cake so it's really quite tiny too.
The technique was very much inspired by this super delightful tutorial by Coco Land Cakes. Isn't her blog TO DIE?
What I Learned:
• I'm not thrilled with the buttercream recipe that I used, it came out a little grainy - the warm weather may have been partially to blame as the butter melted and separate the icing a touch. Time to begin some buttercream research... Oh nom nom...
• I have a shaky hand. Not sure what I'm going to do about that one. Hrmmm.
• Six inch layer cakes are super fun to decorate and really freaking cute to eat! I wish I'd taken a photo of the cake sliced but sadly did not. Oh well, next time.
